For more than half a century, Peter Schumann (left), has the been the driving force, behind Bread and Puppet Theater. Every summer, the company—professionals and volunteers including neighboring kids—gather to entertain, but also to advocate for social justice, oppose racism and war, and exemplify the possibility of and aspiration for a better world. The company travels around the US and the world performing, but also adding a vibrant presence to demonstrations and protests, as well as 4th of July parades. Celebratory and outraged, spiritual and down-to-earth practical, it carries on, despite the recent death of Peter’s wife Elka, the heart of the theater.
