Fat shaming is justified as concern for health, championing self-control, protecting the view from unsightly (at best, disgusting at worse) flab, and normalizing a prejudice—mostly against women. The standard American social prohibition against exposing fat flesh means few females can muster the disregard for social norms that allow these less-than-svelte, bikini-clad sun bathers to bask and enjoy.
