Top: Bicycles for personal transportation and pony carts for small-scale hauling were nearly ubiquitous in 1982 China. But the country perched on the edge of explosive change. Within just a few decades, motorized vehicles would supplement and then largely replace these mammal-powered transports. Speed and convenience trumped economic and environmental costs.
Below: Pony carts for pleasure and nostalgia; bikes largely for fun and exercise. Sadly, in their rivalry for road space ruled by multi-ton behemoths, these gentle vehicles expose the world to pollution and their riders to tragic collisions. Here, two Calais, Vermonters are getting out the vote in the election that defeated Trump, but failed to drive a stake through his political heart.
