In 2003, shortly before the US “shock and awe” invasion, a family stands at their reed house in the marshlands of southern Iraq, near Basrah. The girl was open and curious, while the mother and baby were wary of the American at their doorstep. At this point everyone knew that war was coming soon and the consequences would be terrible.
In a small village in1984 China, a woman and baby stare, not without friendliness, at the Western stranger at their door. This was not long after Mao died and China, which had been closed off to independent travelers, was on the brink of an astoundingly dramatic and rapid transformation.
