Trying to eek out a meager living, these street vendors, thousands of miles apart, sold their hand-crafted toys to children who were likely as impoverished as they. These were hard times in both countries: China was just emerging from the terror days of the Cultural Revolution, and El Salvador was in the midst of a brutal civil war.
(The technical quality of these photos is admittedly terrible. I lacked skill, decent equipment, was exceedingly stingy with the limited film I carried, and couldn’t assess my results until months later.)
