Top: A pictorial quilt of rural Mississippi farm life by Hystercine Rankin (1929-2010). According to the American Folk Art Museum where I saw it, Rankin “learned to quilt from her grandmother and by 12 years old was making bed covers for her 10 brothers and sisters. As a young married woman with seven children of her own, Rankin continued quilting constructing multiple quilts to keep her family warm.”
Below: I riffed on Rankin’s quilt. Replacing her fabric squares, I digitally “sewed” in photos of similar events and scenes. The top left image is from Iraq; the rest from Vermont.
