Top: On a street in 1982 China, a street peddler shapes candy into dragons (I am guessing this is food—anyone out there know for sure?) to the delight of a clutch of kids.
Below: Visible to passers-by, a pastry chef in NYC’s toney West Village creates lovely shapes while facing a plate glass window open to the street.
I get a backache from watching the pastry chef work! Wouldn't you think he'd have a table just a little higher?
I love watching people work, especially when it involves food. A swaying cobra couldn't hold me attention more aptly. Dragons, monkeys, octopi, etc. are formed on with warmed and pliable sugar here in Japan and the maker will perform upon request of a specific request. In the same manner, one can to into a traditional sweet shop and see a camellia, plum, etc formed from beans and served with a cup of green tea. Both are sweets, confectionary delights, maybe food....?
