The raw mess that is the NYC subway system can provide a contemplative oasis, made paradoxically private by the volume of the crowds it moves. Protected by the disinterest of strangers, it is a fine place to hold someone, to nap or read, to imagine others' lives. The top pair seems to share an intimacy and ease that makes the rest of the train disappear. The bottom couple appears to have just gotten engaged. She keeps admiring and fingering the diamond ring on her hand, while he seems distracted, even worried.
