I regularly dropped in on this spring litter of four kits in a den hidden just a few yards off the edge of Route 14, which rolls between hardscrabble Hardwick and harder scrabble Barre, Vt. While all the other kits ran away when they spotted me, this one would hold its ground and look into my eyes for as long as I stayed quiet and moved with great slowness.
On the Paris subway, people mostly ignored me when I took photos. But although this woman never said a word, I sensed that she wanted me to take her picture. We exchanged small smiles, I raised the camera, and when I lowered it, she nodded, and we went our separate ways.
