There is romance in solitude; none in loneliness.
Top: Would this photo of a middle aged woman alone in a cafe read differently if she were young or if it were a man?
Middle: Facing the boardwalk and the Atlantic Ocean, each of these Coney Island/Brighton Beach denizens occupies their own bench. Is this an illustration of how atomized our lives have become or of the pleasures of carving solo space and quiet, even in a big city?
Bottom: This image of rowing alone off the coast of Maine gestures more toward romantic solitude than sad loneliness. But in truth, it could be either …
As is true for all these images.
Terry, this is a beautiful meditation and collection of images on a theme essential to our everyday lives and to the human condition. Thank you.
So true. I spend a lot of time alone, in solitude, but not lonely. But if you took a photo, you would not know my state of mind or state of life. Especially since it is everchanging 😊
