THE KITTEN: Always amusing, the playfulness of cats is, of course, practice for killing mice (good), birds (bad).
THE GROUNDHOGS: They were eating my garden, down to the nubbins. So I set a hav-a-hart trap, and not a day had passed before I had captured two groundhogs. But just outside the cage, a much larger rodent was wailing mournfully. Clearly, the two groundhogs in the trap were her babies. So what else, I freed them. Score one for the groundhogs and zero for the gardener.
.
Last (and only) time we tried that we ended up with a skunk in the trap. Then of course even if you get the groundhog without mourning mama pleading for her baby’s release what do you do with it? It’s illegal to release it somewhere else. Fencing is your friend.
Tough choice, but I too would go for mother love.
