The self-escalating violence of mobs is truly frightening. But better statues than people--in pretty much all cases. ;)
The French were pretty unhappy with the church and deliberately disfigured church statuary.
Oh yeah. Much pf that unhappiness was assiduously earned and--minus the guillotine--not unwarranted.

I'm reminded of the wonderful sculptures of Magdalena Abakanowicz, who made bodies without heads or heads without bodies (less often), but not together...

Amazing what fanatics and zealots, whether religious of political, will do. Of course they also behead real people as well as statues.
