The fungus looks something like Shaggy Mane, AKA Shaggy Ink Cap, scientific name Coprinus comatus. I'm no espert on mushrooms, and this might not be the same thing at all. But it resembles it, and my guess is that it's at least Coprinus.
another commenter, who knows his stuff sez: And not just any mushroom, but an “Inky Cap” - Coprinopsis atramentaria, edible ( before it turns inky) but don’t eat it with alcohol- as it will give you an incredibly awful time that usually doesn’t result in death!

I hate to dis the water pipe, but that mushroom's got it going on!
Agreed, although the water pipe was at Goddard which is pretty fragile right now.
That is a truly amazing similarity!

Neat, isn't it. Thanks for reading Opposable.
So the strands hanging down from the mushroom are part of the mushroom?
YUP. weird isnt it. Saw it on a neighbors' lawn and ran back for my camera.
Great eye.
Thanks. Some days, I relate to that mushroom.
So wonderful. An absolutely perfect pairing!!!
