There is so much beauty with the sadness in your pictures. I see courage in the faces that look out and show their despair. In the mother and child and the couple on the subway there is the comfort people can offer to each other. Yes humans are a strange species and it is frightening time in our country.

Thank you. Like you, some people found this post hopeful, and I am so glad there was room for that interpretation, but for me the pics and song were dark and despairing, which is how I feel these days. Ah we humans are a strange species.

A wonderful song and fabulous photos. I couldn't bring myself to listen to it today, but it is embedded in my memory. I have sung it many times. It causes me to think about the American experience and the issues about Stephen Foster. None of us is truly blameless, I guess. We live in our times and, if we are wise, try to look back and interrogate the past to try to understand the present and move forward (as we must). Thank you, Terry!

Thanks Janet. Well put. Yes, I thought about how racist some of Foster's songs are, but this one is not. And if it is good enough for Mavis ...
