Thanks. That would make sense. On an autumn night one would expect that the soil would be warmer than the air above so the water vapor in the ground will evaporate. Once in the air it is super-cooled because even though the air is below freezing, the liquid or vapor has no surface on which to nucleate. When, however, it reaches the edges of the leaves, the crystallization process begins.

It's amazing how a tiny seed crystal serves as the base for extended crystal growth. such processes occur not only with water-->ice, but also with minerals like aluminum oxide-->sapphire. (I refer to the good stuff, not the crummy dug-ups).
