Good stuff, Terry. One of the snappers I helped cross a road this spring gaped at me as well, and I was shocked at how beautifully clean and Barbie pink his/her mouth was, esp. given the muck-of-ages coloring on the shell and body.
Also helped my first northern musk turtle this spring too. Not too common around here.
Turtles need more helpers who understand and protect them and their habitats. More safe passageways need to be engineered for them as they travel their traditional and so very necessary routes.
Thank you. Sorry I missed Sy's talk. Love your memorable encounter. They are, one and all, unforgettable! All part of the world we live in but too often fail to see.
What a dangerous (heedless and vicious), poignant species we are. It was a lovely talk. And she and her illustrator, Matt Patterson, were true enthusiasts, in the best sense of the word.

Thanks. Yes, Barbie pink. perfect. Barbie pink on Gary Oldman {in Slow House).
Meant "Slow Horses" of course.
Dang you’re a good writer!
Thank you, but sadly, I never know which of my multiple Carol buddies has written. Whoever, good to hear kind words.

YES!
Excellent photos and story. The text almost qualifies as poetry. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, Jonny.

Wish I had kept track of how many turtles my husband "saved"!
It is a unambiguously good thing to do.
I heard an NPR story about them yesterday. They are the most threatened species of vertebrate i cant imagine a world without them.
You didn't tell about the wooden one in the middle!
I leave some mysteries ... that, and I can't remember. Some museum, likely pre-Columbian Central America.
Ah! You're entitled to mysteries, but I was hoping it was something you owned. It's very beautiful.
It is. It is terracotta, perhaps from the Met.
